This is a great tutorial on hardanger, a traditional form of Norwegian embroidery which you can follow along in this step-by-step tutorial. At the end of the tutorial, by using the design discussed, you can create a Hardanger Cross Embroidery.
The cross pattern is basically utilizing the cluster block pattern. Custer block pattern is actually five satin stitches over four threads and then you work around. For this cross pattern, you do not cut out the middle. Eyelet stitches are stitch in the middle to make the dove eyes.
You may use a different colored evenweave fabric cloth as shown for the cross pattern. For the cross pattern you may use a different color than white.
